Congratulations! You’ve finally got off the renting merry-go-round and onto the property ladder. Owning your own home is incredibly rewarding but comes with a lot of potential pitfalls too. So, what do you need to do when moving from a rented home into your own new home? Here are a few things to stay on top of:
1. Check what’s yours and what’s not
Depending on your rental you’ll either be in a furnished, part-furnished or unfurnished property. Either way, when you took on the lease you would have been given a list of what was provided in the property. Make sure to check this list (If you can’t find it you can request a new copy from the landlord/agency) so that you don’t take anything that’s not yours.
2. Make sure you inform all your utility companies.
Gas, Electric, Water, Council Tax, Internet, TV, Phone… Whatever comes into the property in your name should be stopped from the day you move out. There may be another tenant lined up to move in after a quick inspection, so don’t leave them anything they can take advantage of. You’ll also need to set these up at your new home and you don’t want to pay for them twice or have any difficulties, so make sure you speak to them all and take your final meter readings! It’s also a good idea to switch everything off at the mains too.
3. Take photos of everything!
Once you’ve packed everything up and you’re ready to go, it’s a good idea to take photos of what you’ve left behind. This needs to be as thorough as you can, so walls, windows, carpets, curtains, bathroom… absolutely everything as it will be the condition of the rented property that determines whether you’ll get your deposit back.
4. Get a good removal company
It may sound obvious but when moving into your own home you want to make sure that everything goes where it’s supposed to and that nothing gets damaged on the way. A good removal company, rather than a “man with a van”, can make all the difference on moving day. Check for insurance for damages, reviews and testimonials.
Moving home is said to be one of the most stressful experiences you can go through in your life but follow these tips and you should make it as smooth as possible.
